The non-profit began as a deeply personal mission rooted in our return to Bastrop, Louisiana, after decades away. Witnessing the neglected state of Whispering Pines Cemetery, a historic resting place for black educators, veterans, and community leaders, we felt compelled to act. Overgrown and inaccessible, the cemetery’s condition reflected the lingering effects of historical discrimination and neglect. Recognizing the need for change, we joined with other concerned residents to form a community-driven initiative dedicated to restoring this sacred space to its former dignity.
Our journey gained momentum when the Morehouse Parish Police Jury unanimously voted to transfer control of the cemetery to our organization. This milestone marked a turning point, empowering us to unite family members, neighbors, and supporters to address decades of disregard. With a shared sense of purpose, we are committed to clearing the grounds, reestablishing accessibility, and honoring the legacy of those buried here. Together, we are taking meaningful steps to not only restore the cemetery but also to rebuild a sense of pride and respect for Bastrop’s historical and cultural heritage.
